Net-zero carbon commitments have been entered into by several governments – including the U.K.’s – and numerous corporate entities e.g. Shell, Sainsbury’s and PwC. The rationale to do so is irrefutable but for the corporates themselves and for the investment community what do zero-carbon commitments amount to? How should corporate performance and asset performance be interpreted, understood, measured and monitored? What are the roles of standards, frameworks and benchmarks – including the EU Taxonomy, the TCFD, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the CDSB, and sector specific standards such as BREEAM – in regard of net zero carbon commitments?

The proliferation of mandatory and voluntary standards, frameworks and benchmarks provide a rich mine of information to gather environmental data on corporate performance. It supports analysis, evaluation and decision making. Key issues that have arisen – and which our speaker panel will address – include:

  • Standardisation – what metrics are we using?
  • Transparency – verification of what’s reported
  • Disclosure – voluntary v mandatory
  • Measuring action not intention
